U.S. District Court Victory

On Feb. 14, 2020, Motorola Solutions announced that a jury in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois decided in favor of Motorola Solutions in its trade secret theft and copyright infringement cases against Hytera Communications.

The jury awarded Motorola Solutions a total of $764.6 million in damages, including $345.8 million in compensatory damages for damages sustained and $418.8 million in punitive damages for Hytera’s willful and malicious misappropriation of Motorola Solutions’ trade secrets. Significantly, Motorola Solutions was awarded the maximum amount requested. In addition, Motorola Solutions will seek a worldwide injunction preventing Hytera from further misappropriating Motorola Solutions’ stolen trade secrets and infringing its copyrights.

Hytera advanced its own agenda for economic gain and to satisfy its shareholders by exploiting Motorola Solutions’ technology, which remains in Hytera products to this day. The jury’s verdict reaffirms that Hytera’s way of doing business through the theft of another company’s technology will not be tolerated.

Motorola Solutions believes that robust, legitimate competition drives innovation and benefits our customers and our industry as a whole. The theft of our proprietary technology is damaging to our company, and more importantly, it directly harms our customers and threatens the ability of all American companies to innovate. We remain committed to defending Motorola Solutions’ valuable intellectual property as we continue delivering exceptional products, services and solutions for our customers around the world.
