How We Build Security In

Secure Software Development Lifecycle and Quality

Our mission is to deliver high quality, defect free software to our customers. And we believe that quality software must be secure. Our Secure Software Development Lifecycle (S-SDLC) injects security activities into each main phase of development, from before a developer touches the keyboard to after a product is deployed in the field. By shifting security to the left and embracing rapid feedback loops, we can address security vulnerabilities as they’re detected more quickly and easily.

Cybersecurity Champions Story

At Motorola Solutions, we believe security is everyone’s responsibility and that building a strong cybersecurity culture is foundational to our goals and integral to our overall success. We have developed a strong Cyber Champion program within our development and engineering teams. Our champions build a community of practice and development around core cybersecurity principles, such as secure design and secure code development. With training and awareness our champions support the secure development lifecycle and mentor and coach our development and engineering teams.

Cyber Threat Intelligence

Cyber threats to public safety agencies, utilities, and governments continue to grow. These threats are trending upwards in number, scale and sophistication. The MSI Threat Intelligence team informs customers and employees of real-world cyber threats applicable to all of our customers. With this information, decisions around Cybersecurity are better informed. Intelligence communications inform how to prevent cyber threats to our products and services. Armed with crisp situational awareness, customer operational security outcomes meet needed expectations.

Security Release Notes

Security release notes and technical notices provide important information on the security improvements and vulnerabilities closed within each new release or update of an MSI product. They provide our customers with direction and guidance on why it’s so important to keep their systems on the most current and secure available release available. MSI provides this information through mechanisms such as security release notes within the product documentation and then a broader Motorola Technical Notice (MTN) to customers of the product.

Community

At Motorola Solutions our commitment to security doesn’t end with our solutions. We extend our expertise and influence into the community by partnering with various government entities, such as the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE) and educational universities and organizations. Through these partnerships we work together to help provide guidance and resources which build stronger cyber-focused curriculums, ensuring a future generation of work professionals to bridge the current cyber skills gap in the workforce today. We also extend our knowledge across the industry by participating in cybersecurity working groups, supporting cybersecurity events and authoring security-related thought leadership materials.

SaaS Shared Responsibility Model

Cloud environments are often seen as complicated and nebulous. We understand the need to raise awareness of the shared responsibilities between Motorola Solutions and our customers for Software as a Service (SaaS) cloud-based solutions. SaaS solutions enable easier deployments, lower overhead, opportunity for cost savings and potentially better security compared to on-premise solutions. Ultimately, our goal is to better inform our customers to maximize the utility and security of our suite of SaaS solutions.
