The challenge
For much of the year, safety officials at USF are dedicated to observing weather events to keep their campus community out of harm’s way. They experience severe weather from March to November, with hurricanes and tornadoes generally striking between June and November, and major thunderstorms and lightning occurring from spring to fall.
USF has used Rave Alert for over 10 years and the mass notification system is essential in protecting the campus community during severe weather. Although the system allowed USF to deliver general notifications to its campus community, administrators wanted these messages to be more targeted and immediate.
The solution
The education institute worked with Rave Mobile Safety to revise its automated weather alerts, drawing a polygon around the campus, so only those with the potential to be affected by the information are notified.
The impact
In addition to severe weather, USF issues emergency notifications through Rave Alert for power outages, fires, environmental disasters and criminal activities including active shooters and bomb threats. Using Rave Alert for more than 10 years has given USF the opportunity to contribute to its development, with some of its features a direct result of the collaboration.
We needed reliability and a quick response was important to us. The Rave platform immediately performed out of the gate. We could prove we could send messages out very, very quickly.
