The challenge

Outdated communication technology created several issues for Eaton County:

  • Unlike the era of landlines where dispatch could instantly verify a caller's location and identity, they were forced to waste precious time collecting critical information during emergency calls.

  • Residents no longer rely on  traditional channels like TV or radio for emergency news, they expect immediate updates on their mobiles. Without this, misinformation could be spread.

  • Managing school safety proved difficult, with emergency responders waiting up to 15 minutes to confirm the nature of an event - whether it was a drill or a serious incident, a delay which could prove critical in a crisis.

The solution

Eaton County Central Dispatch adopted a suite of communication tools. This included Rave Alert to send mass notifications about urgent local situations, Smart911 to share user profiles during 9-1-1- calls, and the Rave Panic Button for schools to communicate an emergency to 9-1-1.

The impact

The tools have helped Eaton County Central Dispatch to mitigate chaos during emergencies. Rave Alert has allowed for the distribution of ongoing, fact-based communication, preventing the spread of misinformation. The Smart911 profiles saves dispatch time and provides first responders with crucial caller information during an emergency. And the Rave Panic Button instantly communicates emergencies to 9-1-1, facilitating enhanced collaboration between public safety agencies and school officials.
