'OF ALL THE THINGS THAT WE CARRY WITH US... NOTHING'S MORE IMPORTANT THAN OUR COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM.'

Ralph Martin, Chief of Police, City of Santa Maria

NG9-1-1 Vision Achieved: City of Santa Maria Enhances Community Protection With Next Gen Technology

The Santa Maria Valley lies between the Sierra Madre Mountains and the Pacific Ocean at the north end of Santa Barbara County. This gorgeous Central Coast area includes majestic beaches, rolling dunes, pristine parks and picturesque golf courses. In a nod to the county’s agricultural roots, the annual Elks Rodeo and Parade riding and roping competitions, barn dances and concerts draw locals and visitors.

When Chief Ralph Martin joined the City of Santa Maria Police Department, he was attracted by the opportunity of rebuilding the department from the ground up—literally. The city was about to build a new dispatch center, and in addition to acquiring a new fleet of vehicles, there was an opportunity to upgrade to new communications technology.

One key criterion for the upgrade to the city’s communications and dispatch systems was ensuring that first responders get all the information they need to respond to calls. “The integration of all our technologies will give our officers the resources they need. Our dispatchers will be able to retrieve information quickly and disseminate it to our first responders to support them out in the field,” says Alfredo Ruiz, Communications Supervisor, Santa Maria Police Department.
