Driving smarter policing with ANPR-integrated mobility application
WA Police Force's ANPR system relied on non-integrated tablets, forcing officers to complete manual tasks across multiple screens. This wasted valuable time and affected incident awareness. WA Police worked with Motorola Solutions to create a safer, intuitive workflow, integrating ANPR capability into a mobility app via an Apple CarPlay enablement.

The challenge
From helping them to locate missing people to identifying uninsured vehicles, ANPR is an essential piece of technology for WA Police Force. However, using it on patrol meant accessing an ANPR application on a mobile tablet fitted in the vehicle, which presented several challenges for the force. The application could only be used inside the vehicle and it was not integrated with core systems. Verifying vehicles, incident reporting and status updates all had to be completed manually, often across multiple screens and logon interfaces, leading to a duplication of efforts and a waste of crucial policing efforts.
The solution
WA Police Force’s ANPR system was integrated into Motorola Solutions Field Response and Reporting Mobility Application, via Apple CarPlay.
The integration incorporates the force’s core systems: the Records Management System (RMS) and Motorola Solutions’ PremierOne CAD (Computer-Aided Dispatch).
Quicker, more informed decisions
The integration of the Field Response and Reporting Mobility Application with ANPR, RMS and CAD systems has provided critical operational information in a single, intuitive interface. This has enabled WA Police Force to make quicker, more informed decisions.
When the ANPR systems detect vehicles of interest, officers hear details over their audio system in real-time.
They can operate the system hands-free, via Siri voice control.
Instead of manually retyping a number plate to confirm its status, a single tap on a mobile device or the in-vehicle media unit enables a live database search for a vehicle.
Officers can monitor and respond to ANPR-identified vehicles even when working outside their vehicles, via a Wi-Fi connection from their mobile device to the vehicle’s unit.
Having immediate… access to hands-free ANPR data helps
our frontline officers work more quickly, safely and efficiently,
and increases their awareness of potential risks on our roads.
