Elevating safety at the Port of Tauranga

Elevating safety at the Port of Tauranga

New Zealand's busiest port embraces digital future

Poor coverage and connections had left the Port of Tauranga open to communication failure. A robust workflow leveraging the MOTOTRBO Capacity Plus solution has given the port the reliability they require.

Site-wide coverage strengthens communications

An investment in Motorola Solution’s next generation of digital infrastructure has unified voice communications, data, analytics, recording and location capabilities. Reliable radio coverage has expanded across the site, driving improved safety and efficiency.

About the Port of Tauranga

The Port of Tauranga is New Zealand’s largest port and international freight gateway. Since opening in 1998, it has expanded to handle the enormous cargo volume arriving and departing daily by road, rail and sea. The port’s facilities include the container terminal, bulk cargo wharves, a bunker berth and extensive cargo storage and handling facilities.

The challenge

Surrounded by 16,000 steel shipping containers stacked 10 - 25 meters high, communication between staff at the Port of Tauranga was challenging. Their mixed fleet of analogue and digital radios delivered scratchy call quality and weak audio volume, and they had no means of relaying site-wide safety announcements. Under the traditional radio management method it was also very time-consuming and expensive to manually update 300 radios with configuration changes simultaneously.

The solution

With the support of our partner, Mobicomm, we delivered the port our scalable, single-site MOTOTRBO Capacity Plus trunking solution -  with six SLR5000 repeaters and 12 simultaneous time slots.

The MOTOTRBO Capacity Plus solution was implemented with existing MOTOTRBO systems via a simple software upgrade. Radio coverage has significantly improved, enhancing communication, safety and efficiency.

  • The system facilitates trunking for up to 12 digital voice talk paths, 24 dedicated data paths and as many as 1,200 radio users - without the port needing to purchase additional radio licenses.

  • GPS-enabled location services, text messaging and telemetry are all available on the same system.

  • Users can communicate in any location, at any volume, even in noisy backgrounds.

  • System-wide calling enables communication to all staff simultaneously.

  • Devices can quickly deploy new channels, updates and configurations as required.
