About Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport
The world’s leading private airport operator, VINCI Airports has managed operations at Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport since 2018. By the end of its 25-year contract, it intends to handle 15 million passengers annually. It is the first airport operator committed to achieving net zero emissions across its network by 2050.

The challenge
Upon assuming operations, VINCI Airports identified a critical need to improve security and the monitoring of passenger flow at Nikola Tesla Airport. The airport possessed over 600 IP cameras, but they lacked next-generation video analytics capabilities, bandwidth and storage, and had a limited field of view. It also wasn’t possible to monitor all operational aspects of the airport from a single point remotely.
The solution
Nikola Tesla Airport looked at various suppliers, but only Motorola Solutions, who provides its MOTOTRBO system, had the option of an Artificial Intelligence Network Video Recorder (AI NVR) that could upgrade the airport’s existing cameras with next-generation video analytics.
In partnership with TeleGroup and All Control, Motorola Solutions worked closely with the airport to deliver a wide range of integrated hardware and software. In addition to training and ongoing service and support, we implemented the following technology.
A Land Mobile Radio (LMR) system comprising MOTOTRBO Capacity Plus VHF and UHF systems with DR 3000 repeaters, DP4000e and DM4000e Series radios, MOTOTRBO Radio Management software and the SmartPTT Control Room Solution.
A fixed video security solution comprising Avigilon Network Video Recorders, Avigilon Unity Video analytics and management software, and a range of Avigilon cameras including H5SL and H5A Series Cameras.
Broadband Push-To-Talk communications comprising the WAVE PTX service, WAVE PTX Radio Gateway, TLK 100 WAVE PTX portable radios and WAVE PTX Mobile application and MOTOTRBO Ion Portable Smart Radios and Evolve LTE Handhelds.
A mobile video security solution comprising VB400 body cameras, multiport docks and RFID reader (to allocate cameras to specific staff members).
A radio alert system.
The impact
The integrated ecosystem unifies numerous technologies onto a single platform, enhancing operations and making Belgrade Nikola Tesla an airport of the future.
Transformed safety and security With the Avigilon fixed video security solution, it’s now easier to detect breaches, track persons or items of interest, find missing individuals and highlight unusual behaviour.
Incident management and crime prevention is faster and more accurate, as analytics-generated alarms are automatically pushed to radios via a text message or text-to-voice alerts.
Staff can now prioritise operations rather than system maintenance, as the Avigilon platform also provides in-built health monitoring.
The VB400 body cameras extend the reach of the video system to areas where fixed cameras are not deployed, increasing coverage and minimising blind spots. Video footage is now live-streamed to the Airport Operation Centre via Wi-Fi, as well as stored on the Artificial Intelligence Network Video Recorder (AI NVR).
Enhanced communications Off-site communication is possible thanks to the WAVE PTX Radio Gateway allowing the use of WAVE PTX as an extension of the airport’s existing MOTOTRBO two-way radio network. Real-time information and alerts are more easily shared across teams, leading to smarter work and access to unified data, evidence and incident reports.
“Our new video system enables our security department
to respond much faster in critical situations.”
Zoran Skoko, Security Development Director, Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport
“I was immediately impressed by the scalability,
functionality and maturity of this new end-to-end platform.”
Marko Marković, IT Director, Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport
“Now, we can easily cover more ground and capture
moments that would have otherwise been missed.”
Zoran Skoko, Security Development Director, Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport
“It seems like the system almost autonomously takes care of itself,
so we can focus on directing operations and responding to incidents,
rather than keeping the system running.”
Ivan Stanojevic, IT Desktop Support and Service Desk Team Leader, Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport
