What is broadband push to talk?

Broadband push-to-talk (BBPTT) is a solution that allows people to instantly communicate with other users at the push of a button on their broadband-connected device. Unlike regular telephone calls, broadband push-to-talk allows 1-to-1 or 1-to-many calls so users can talk to a group of people at once, making it ideal for workgroups where everyone needs the same information at the same time. Broadband push-to-talk solutions normally use an app installed on the user’s smartphone, tablet or PC, or a dedicated device to provide the service. Broadband push-to-talk is sometimes also referred to as push-to-talk over cellular (PTToC or PoC) or push-to-talk over LTE (PTToLTE).

Motorola Solutions offers the WAVE PTX broadband push-to-talk solution that provides voice, multi-media and live video streaming over 3G, 4G and Wi-Fi on the user’s smartphone, tablet, PC or a range of specifically developed BBPTT devices.

What does push to talk mean?

Push-to-talk (PTT) refers to communications systems where a call is instantly established at the push of a button, rather than by dialing a number to connect to a user as in traditional telephone systems. Two-way radio networks providing PTT have been available for many years utilising DMR, TETRA and APCO P25 technology and are relied on by public safety agencies and private enterprises around the world to enable instant, dependable group communications. A more recent PTT solution is broadband PTT, sometimes referred to as PTT over cellular.
