Broward County on Leading Edge of Emergency Communications
Motorola Solutions’ interoperable ASTRO 25 system will connect local first responders with agencies across Florida for fast, efficient mission-critical response
CHICAGO – July 10, 2017 – When a hurricane or other emergency strikes, Broward County first responders are at the scene to ensure the safety of residents and visitors from the beach to the Everglades. The county has selected Motorola Solutions (NYSE: MSI) for their new ASTRO® 25 land-mobile radio (LMR) network that will be interoperable with other agencies across the state.
This new system will be a more efficient digital network built on the latest standards-based Project 25 (P25) technology for seamless public safety communications across agencies. The ASTRO 25 network will provide enhanced coverage in Broward County and with surrounding municipalities. It is resilient against extreme weather conditions and other potential disruptions. It also provides clearer audio where first responders can be heard in noisy environments, even with sirens blaring behind them.
Motorola Solutions will manage the system for the next 10 years, making sure first responders are using the latest software and applications for reliable, secure communications allowing them to focus on their top priority – the people they protect.
In case of a natural disaster or large event, Motorola Solutions is dedicated to supporting Broward County before, during and after it takes place. The company has been standing by its Florida customers for more than 70 years, assisting in hurricanes, Super Bowls, political conventions and more.
“Broward County will have state-of-the-art technology for seamless communications every day and for fast response during emergencies, from a car crash to a storm impacting several counties,” said Robert Marshall, Motorola Solutions vice president. “They will be joining the dozens of Florida counties and cities already using P25 mission-critical communications systems built by Motorola Solutions.”
The new P25 network will complement Broward County’s Motorola Solutions PremierOne™ computer-aided dispatch (CAD) system, recently implemented at regional 911 Consolidated Dispatch Centers. Dispatchers will be able to determine the location of first responders using GPS functionality available on their Motorola Solutions APXTM P25 radios. That means officers closest to the scene can be dispatched quickly and effectively, helping to reduce response times.
Looking to the future, the ASTRO 25 system is ready for the next generation of mission-critical technologies. Its P25 infrastructure, combined with software and intelligent middleware, will connect and seamlessly interoperate with broadband and mobile applications built for first responders for a real-time view of events.
