“Realizing Dreams”, Inspiring Young Hearts to Innovate

Beijing, China -- July 8, 2013 – Motorola Solutions (NYSE: MSI) and Motorola Solutions Foundation today announced its collaboration with Junior Achievement (JA), the world’s largest non-profit organization dedicated to educating students in work readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy. The collaboration around “Realizing Dreams: The Enterprise Mobility Innovation Competition” (Competition), has successfully concluded in Beijing.

The Competition involved 139 student contestants from the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing Jiaotong University, Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics and Tianjin University. To inspire a passion and realize the potential for innovation among these prestigious university students, the Competition served as a platform catalyzes innovative ideas into tangible business solutions. As one of many public welfare projects demonstrating the company’s continued endeavors to foster innovation among local talent, the Competition is supported by a financial grant from Motorola Solutions Foundation, the charitable arm of Motorola Solutions. And the Motorola Solutions Foundations has been making contribution to Junior Achievement in the past 7 years as a continued effort toward developing Chinese local talents and fostering innovation.

Key Facts

  • This year’s Competition took place between March and July 2013. From its initial heats down to the final rounds, a winning team was finally selected out of a total of 44 groups.

  • The Competition also leveraged two most advanced, award-winning enterprise-class mobile devices from Motorola Solutions: the ET1 Enterprise Tablet and the MC40 Handheld Mobile Computer. Participants were invited to choose from either device based on their industrial requirements and respective software development features. Industries associated with the Competition included healthcare, retail, manufacturing, transportation and logistics.

  • The Competition was held in two rounds. During the initial heats, contestants submitted their programme designs which were evaluated by Motorola Solutions experts based on their originality, potential for commercialization, associated benefits to industries and society at large, as well as their technical advantages. In the next round, each team then visited Motorola Solutions to study for a month or two. Here, they were each assigned to a employee volunteer tutor to complete the software programming. In the final round, contestants’ final works were revealed appraised industry experts from Motorola Solutions and its partners.

  • The winning team and their teachers will be invited to visit the Motorola Solutions Asia-Pacific Headquarters in Singapore, a trip which is sponsored by Motorola Solutions. In addition, they will be offered an exchange program with the students from the “Innovative Product Design” project co-organized by Singapore’s Ngee Ann Polytechnic and Motorola Solutions, to share the competition experience.

  • The Competition was warmly received by the Competition participants. Relating to their daily experiences as consumers and with various service providers, the software designed by the participants included: a system for express deliverymen whose products, when scanned, would automatically select an optimal delivery route. Another solution, aimed at shopping malls, made it convenient for consumers to quickly find the location and information of their desired products. There is also a solution which when integrated with the business features of Motorola Solutions’ emergency response communications system , is designed to increase the work efficiency of doctors, support their requests for supplies, as well as enhance the capability of data statistics at the scene of disaster relief.

  • During this year’s Competition, the university students revealed their most creative and inspired work with regard to enterprise-class mobile applications, and further enrich these products and develop them into workable solutions based Motorola Solutions’ products. With the support of volunteers provided by both the company and its partners, student participants can deepen their understanding of the demands of industry’s consumers. It is also hoped that the success of this Competition will inspire new, innovative career opportunities for these young participants.
