Motorola Solutions Employees Gain Valuable Customer Insights Through Firefighter Orientation
Each year in the late fall, Motorola Solutions (MSI) employees meet in Champaign, Ill. for a day of firefighter training at the Illinois Fire Service Institute (IFSI). This year, employees gathered from many of Motorola’s campuses within the United States and even a small group from Krakow, Poland. Each trainee was geared from head to toe with helmets, coats, gloves, self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and a Motorola APX™ 7000 XE portable radio to brave the fires while getting an up close and personal understanding of how firefighters rely on these products daily.
Firefighter instructors from the Chicago area serve annually as volunteer mentors and instructors. Each firefighter leads a small group of Motorola employees through four different live training scenarios, giving participants the experience of what it’s like to blindly walk into buildings, as fires burn, smoke rises and even some spaces become pitch black – in this case, within a safe and controlled training atmosphere.
KEY FACTS
- The annual training helps product designers, engineers, marketing professionals and others learn about real-time use cases of radio accessories and the ergonomics of the radio in limited visibility, while performing other extremely critical tasks such as putting out a fire.
- For the past 13 years, Motorola has offered this training to employees, partners and agencies to help participants gain a better understanding of the risks first responders face each day in extreme environments.
- Based on these types of scenarios, Motorola is better able to create products and solutions that help equip first responders to be their best in the moments that matter.
