Bridging Languages: How and Why Federal Agencies Can Now Deploy Assist Mission-Critical Artificial Intelligence for Translation

  • Secures FedRAMP Certified Class D status for the translation capabilities of Motorola Solutions' Assist mission-critical AI.

  • Certifies Assist translation capabilities within SVX body-worn assistants, APX NEXT smart radios and CommandCentral DEMS for meeting rigorous federal security standards.

  • Delivers a broad set of capabilities designed to help officers work more efficiently and improve safety outcomes in the field.

SVX

Imagine a federal law enforcement officer responding to a severe multi-vehicle collision on federal property. Upon arriving at the scene, the officer encounters a driver who speaks limited English and is urgently trying to communicate details about an injured passenger. Connecting to an off-site translation line or waiting for multilingual backup can cost an officer several minutes while they attempt to secure and manage an active emergency scene.

Language barriers can introduce critical delays that impact response times and compromise safety for both officers and the community members they serve.

Securing Federal Certification for Public Safety Cloud Intelligence

Motorola Solutions achieved Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program (FedRAMP®) Certified Class D (formerly known as FedRAMP High Authorization) status for the translation capabilities of its Assist mission-critical artificial intelligence (AI). The security credential applies to Assist translation when integrated with SVX body-worn assistant and APX NEXT smart radio.

This FedRAMP certification – the federal government's highest security baseline for cloud services – now enables federal officers to deploy AI-powered language translation that meets the federal government’s rigorous data protection standards, opening a clear path for federal agencies to adopt the AI tools.

Engineering Mission-Critical Assist for Federal Security

Achieving FedRAMP Certified Class D status requires purposeful system engineering to protect sensitive government data. The cloud architecture uses FIPS-validated encryption, multi-region redundancy, zero-trust access controls and real-time oversight at secure U.S. operations centers. Every piece of data – like video footage and audio streams stored in the cloud – complies with CJIS security standards.

In field operations, officers use SVX, which combines a remote speaker microphone, body camera and Assist into a single piece of hardware that pairs with APX NEXT smart radios. With the push of a button, officers can activate voice translation directly on the device to enable clear communication during incidents where those involved do not speak the same language. In the back office, CommandCentral DEMS securely stores uploaded SVX video and audio recordings.

Joe Balchune, corporate vice president, Federal Markets, Motorola Solutions, said:

"Integrating Assist translation into federal public safety operations requires prioritizing secure, reliable communication and oversight. By effectively breaking down language barriers, we can enable officers to communicate clearly during high-stakes situations, helping them navigate emergencies safely and carry out operations with confidence."

Mission-Critical AI and Evidence Ecosystem

When used together, Motorola Solutions’ technologies can enhance mission-critical operations by providing reliable communications, AI assistance and secure digital evidence management (DEMS) from the start of the incident to case closure.

Time Saved Across Workflows

With Assist, public safety agencies are already reallocating their time toward direct field response and active investigations. Key areas of efficiency include:

  • Accelerated redaction: Redaction capabilities powered by Assist reduce video processing time from about 35 hours to one hour, according to Motorola Solutions customer feedback, by identifying the presence of faces and other sensitive pieces of information for redaction.
  • Searchable media records: Audio from body-worn devices is automatically transcribed and translated within CommandCentral DEMS, turning raw audio into quickly searchable text, cutting down on the amount of time it takes to manually sift through hours of evidence.
  • Direct field support: Integrated translation and policy search drastically reduce delays caused by manual handbook lookups or third-party interpreter call lines.

Setting a New Standard for Federal Technology Deployment

The FedRAMP Certified Class D status for Assist translation capabilities establishes a precedent for deploying cloud-based AI across federal applications. For a full list of Motorola Solutions technologies with FedRAMP Certified Class D status, visit our website.

"In federal applications, trust in the confidentiality, integrity and authenticity of data – from the moment of capture to its real-time and evidentiary use – is imperative. We’ve expanded our FedRAMP Certified Class D portfolio to give government customers the utmost confidence in their ability to communicate across language barriers and benefit from having a path to additional operational efficiencies with feature-rich AI capabilities."
