TETRA Remains for the Road Ahead Author: Danielle Doo

Last month, the Isle of Man celebrated the successful upgrade of its TETRA-based emergency communications system. Users and the public alike depend on this system to support a number of high profile annual events including the world-famous Isle of Man TT (Tourist Trophy) motorcycle festival . The TETRA network provides secure and reliable communications for the Isle of Man Constabulary, Fire and Rescue and Ambulance Services, along with a number of other Government organisations. It allows the Isle of Man to coordinate multi-agency responses to planned events such as the Isle of Man TT as well as unexpected incidents,.

In order to handle expected and unexpected events more efficiently, many existing TETRA users are upgrading and expanding upon their networks by adding additional data capability. Some organisations may choose to use TETRA Enhanced Data Services (TEDS) while others will require 3G or 4G networks to work in parallel. In most cases, mission critical voice communications will remain over TETRA for decades so it’s important that users ensure their TETRA network is future-proof for data expansion.

Improving response time and boosting efficiency requires delivering the right data to the right users at the right time. To deliver mission-critical mobile intelligence, we need to ensure voice and data interoperability across different networks. As TETRA is going to remain for decades and co-exist with broadband, it’s important to invest in technology that allows the transfer of data across networks and to users who carry different devices. In addition to innovation in TETRA and broadband networks, the deployment of other technologies such as Interoperable PTT (WAVE) and Intelligent Middleware helps organisations to achieve their goal: maintaining mission critical voice while getting the right info to the right users, no matter what network or device they’re operating on.

This is the vision we have for our customers and for those who want to leverage their TETRA investment to prepare for the future while achieving key performance goals. We’re encouraged to see customers like the Isle of Man investing in a firm TETRA foundation for the future.

Work to upgrade the Isle of Man’s emergency communications system was completed on schedule and within budget in September 2015. The Department of Home Affairs’ flagship communications project, which was approved by Tynwald, the Isle of Man’s parliament, in December 2014, provides greater resilience and enhanced coverage for the emergency services and other Government users.

Home Affairs Minister Juan Watterson MHK said: “TETRA makes an important contribution towards our priority of keeping people safe. The system is vital to the work of the emergency services and the TT Races and Festival of Motorcycling simply could not function without it. Together with the Emergency Services Joint Control Room, TETRA has helped to establish the Isle of Man as a global leader in terms of integrated communications. This project in partnership with Motorola Solutions has put in place a new and improved system along with a maintenance and support programme.
