Learn how MOTOTRBO helped improve communications for organisers on land and sea and enhanced competitor safety during the Santander 2014 ISAF Sailing World Championships

The International Sailing Federation (ISAF) recently selected a comprehensive MOTOTRBO professional digital radio network for the Santander 2014 ISAF Sailing World Championships. With Santander 2014 acting as the opening qualification regatta for the Rio 2016 Olympic Sailing Competition, high numbers of ships and sailors attended, and competition was fierce. In total, almost 100 nations and more than 1,500 sailors took on the challenge of the Bay of Biscay.

As one of the most important events organised by ISAF, clear communications were required to enhance event management and the safety of competitors at sea. The event relied on a dedicated MOTOTRBO digital two-way radio system providing an integrated voice and data communication network able to meet the complex, simultaneous communications demands encompassing almost 90 km² of sea and coastline around the Bay of Santander.

José Ángel Rodriguez Santos, RFEV president, Santander 2014 ISAF Sailing World Championships, director and member of the Organising Committee, said: “Effective radio communications were essential for the successful operation of the 2014 Championships held at Santander. We were dealing with hundreds of competing yachts, and thousands of competitors, team members and supporters. The Motorola system exceeded our expectations, and we were very pleased to have the support of the market leader for this event.”

The deployed network was not only unique; it was also the most effective in the Cantabria region, ensuring that the Santander 2014 ISAF Sailing World Championships, an event of global importance, were well managed and as safe as possible for all taking part.
