GRID
All Advancing the Lifeline creative relies on a new 4x4 grid. This deviates from the 3x3 grid structure used in core collateral guidelines. The 4x4 grid ensures that Advancing the Lifeline creative is visually differentiated from standard brand creative and provides maximum flexibility for the various Advancing the Lifeline headline and image treatments.

Hero Type
HEADLINE POSITIONING
When paired with imagery, always consider the placement of Hero Type relative to the image. Horizontal Hero Type can be left or right aligned, depending on the image and layout. Vertical Hero Type should always be anchored to the top or bottom of the layout. Hero Type should never be centered within the layout.
Hero Type and subheads should never be positioned: on a subject's face, in an area that detracts from the focal point of the image, or in an area that impacts legibility of the type.
Margins should be equal on the top and bottom, left and right, or on all four sides. Use the margins within the underlying grid to determine the inset position of the Hero Type needed.
For example, if Hero Type is positioned in the upper left corner of a layout, the margin on the left side should be equal to the margin on the right side.
BODY COPY POSITIONING
Body copy should be positioned in an area within the overall layout that is open and visually clear of content. At a minimum, body copy should be positioned one character height away from Hero Type headlines.
Whenever possible, body copy should be placed in either the top or bottom quadrant of a layout. It should be left aligned with other text elements within the layout or aligned to a margin in the underlying grid.
Connected Type
HEADLINE POSITIONING
Connected Type may be positioned on any horizontal grid line for better readability with a selected image.
Connected Type with an edge-to-edge line is most successful when paired with environmental, workstyle, or application photography. It has the greatest impact when positioned centrally (both along the x and y axis) within a layout.
However, an image edge treatment can be positioned off-center within the layout, if needed, to accommodate the selected image and maintain sense of movement in the headline.
SUBHEADER POSITIONING
Connected Type can stand alone or be paired with a subheader and body copy. The subheader should be positioned far enough from the headline so that it doesn’t appear to lock up with it. Ideally, subheaders should be placed in a free space (preferably a corner) of the overall layout.

Incorrect
Do not position subheaders too close to Connected Type

NEGATIVE SPACE LAYOUTS
Negative Space
Negative space has a huge impact on composition and how your work is received. When a design doesn't have sufficient negative space, it can look crowded and overly complicated.
Negative space gives design elements breathing room and draws the viewer’s attention to messaging or imagery.
BACKGROUND COLORS
Our primary background color is white. Occasionally, black can be used as background when it complements the image.

POSTERS
When the artwork needs an area for additional information (i.e. tagline, website, sponsorship, or event details), treat the area as a separate piece from the main layout.
Create the 4x4 grid and margins as you would with any layout. If using a vertical layout, place the additional area above or below the layout. If using a horizontal layout, place the additional area to the left or right of the layout. The headlines and subheads should still adhere to the margins of the main layout.
Ensure there is only one standard color being used throughout the entire layout for consistency and that the color closely matches a color in the image. Maintain all brand standards for Advancing the Lifeline creative such as headline treatments, photography selection, cropping, and layout positioning.
For the additional area, treat it as you would a negative space layout, with a background color of either black or white.
